Distinguished and Famous people from Mitchell

🏘️ William Rutledge

William Rutledge purchased a special survey at Kilmore in 1841 and promoted allotments beside the Melbourne–Sydney route. The location combined water, road traffic and land speculation, practical ingredients in the growth of a colonial township. The private town’s streets followed the old track differently from the more regular government survey laid out later. Rutledge’s wider business career extended beyond the district, but the Kilmore plan remained a specific local undertaking. Its pattern still helps explain why parts of the town do not fit a single tidy grid.

🏡 Ned and John Kelly

Ned Kelly’s childhood included the Beveridge house built by his father John, known as Red Kelly, around 1859. The surviving place connects the later bushranger with an earlier family household, before the events that made him notorious. Its importance lies in that domestic history, rather than in treating every episode of the adult life as a local occurrence. Preservation of the house provides a way to consider family circumstances and the making of historical memory. Beveridge’s connection is specific and physical: a childhood building within a community that has since changed substantially.
